We’re the wealthiest, most educated, most diverse generation in world history. Thanks to the G.I. Bill following World War II, more Americans have a college education. With our spectacular economy, we have more money than any other civilization. And, thanks to productivity improvements, we have more free time than any previous generation.

All these factors combine to allow ordinary people the opportunity to tell their stories—whatever those stories may be. A businessman can write a business book or a first novel. An artist can write a memoir or an historical account.

New book publishing technologies have leveled the playing field for first-time authors, but there were over 500,000 books published last year alone. How does a new author stand out in such a crowded field?
