Rick Barry, basketball legend and NBA Hall of Fame player, had many influential coaches—some good and some bad. While he didn’t name names for the bad coaches, he did talk about the good coaches and influences in his life. First, Rich credits his father as being his best coach. His college coach at University of Miami, Bruce Hale, prepared Rick for the NBA by teaching a style of play that made the transition from college to the Pros easier. In the Pros, Rick credits Lou Carnesecca for being a player’s coach and asking for input from his players.

Rick’s key to success in sports and in life is to learn the fundamentals, practice the fundamentals and constantly work on the fundamentals. Rich considers himself a perfectionist and a fundamentalist. He credits his father for instilling that ethic in him.

The greatest single lesson Rick learned from playing basketball at any level is the value of winning with a team. Nobody can succeed alone, he claims.

Rick has a new book titled, Rick Barry’s Super Sports Trivia, which he says is perfect as a stocking stuffer for the sports or trivia fan in any family.

Rick’s current passion is fishing—fly fishing in particular. He travels to Alaska on fishing trips with friends and colleagues.
