Eliot Cohen, author of CONQUERED INTO LIBERTY

Eliot Cohen is Robert E. Osgood Professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

For ten years he led a SAIS partnership with Syracuse University in providing executive education to general officers and senior Defense Department officials, the National Security Studies program.

Eliot graduated in1977 from Harvard College and he received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard in 1982.

Eliot has been Assistant Professor of Government at Harvard, and Assistant Dean of Harvard College; a member of the Strategy Department of the United States Naval War College; on the Policy Planning Staff of the Office of the Secretary of Defense; and professor of strategic studies at SAIS.

He served as Counselor of the Department of State where he had special responsibility for advising the Secretary on matters pertaining to Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Russia, as well as general strategic issues.

Eliot is the author of 4 books, and co-author of 5 books.

He received the Air Force’s decoration for exceptional civilian service for articles he wrote.

In 1982, Eliot was commissioned in the United States Army Reserve.
